Figures Highlight Government’s Housing Failures.

Reports on Dublin rental market and housing list highlights Government’s failure to fix housing sector- Liam Coyne

The Social Democrats Candidate for Dublin South Central  Liam Coyne has said figures published today (Tuesday Feb 9th,) once again highlight the outgoing Lab/FG Government’s failure to tackle the housing crisis.

Figures show that rents, especially in Dublin, continue to soar and  are putting more and more people at risk of becoming homeless.
Liam was commenting on a report published on the Irish housing rental market by Daft.ie as well as figures published in the Irish Times Newspaper concerning the numbers on Dublin City Council’s housing list..
“The figures were hardly unexpected, but do make for grim reading.” he said.

Commenting on the daft.ie report he said the average rent price per month for the South of the City is now €1547 per month.

“That is a staggering jump of 7.6% from 2014.  What is even more frightening is that this rise in rents is showing no sign of abating any time soon.”

Nationally the number of rental properties are down more than 5000 this time last year to just 3600, he said.
“The numbers seeking housing from Dublin City Council are shameful. The city is crying out for more social housing to be built. Our people deserve better.”
“The two reports say a lot about the failed policies of the FG/Lab administration and previous governments in relation to housing.”
“We need to do so much more that what is being done at present. This is why I and the Social Democrats are committed to having a cabinet Minister in charge of housing, setting up a housing authority, and an increase in rent supplement.” he added.
“We cannot afford to keeping making the same mistakes over and over again.,” he added.
Ends.
