Liam Coyne says SDs will stick to our values. We are not in this for ‘Mercs and perks’

Statement on Behalf of Social Democrats Dublin South Central Candidate Liam Coyne.
Feb 4th 2016
For immediate release.
Liam Coyne reiterates Social Democrat’s dedication to their core values and dismisses suggestions party will do deal to keep FG/Labour in power.

“We will be sticking to the Social Democrat’s core values. The SD will only practice what we preach. We are not in this for mercs and perks.”

The Social Democrats Candidate for Dublin South Central Liam Coyne has said his party will be sticking to its core values no matter how the numbers pan out following the February 26th ballot.

He said the party will not compromise on positions including its proposal to abolish Irish Water. He said that for him personally there was no point in running for election unless key principles are adhered to.

When questioned by a supporter of a rival candidate at a meeting last night Liam said he was not in the race “just to get into government.”

He rejected claims the SDs are willing to prop up the outgoing administration should it be a few TDs short of being able to form a government after all the votes have been counted,
The Social Democrats will “not do a Labour” by promising the public one thing during the campaign and then do the opposite in government.

In the eventuality of that unlikely scenario happening he said he would  “resign” and “walk away” from politics rather than give up on any of the values and ideals he signed up for.

He said that if the current government are short a few votes in the Dail to form a new administration it would be far more likely that they will seek a deal with independents, like Michael Lowry rather than the SDs.
Liam was speaking after he hosted a talk about measures to help deal with the national housing crisis.

The meeting was extremely positive where new and promising ideas on the housing crisis were advanced by two outstanding speakers Pat Greene of the Dublin Simon Community and Dr Lorcan Sirr of the Dublin Institute of Technology.

The SD’s manifesto includes plans to have a cabinet Minister in charge of housing, the establishment of a housing authority, and an immediate increase in the rent supplement.

During the meeting Liam voiced many of the criticisms he has heard about Fine Gael and Labour’s housing policies on the doorsteps from the people of Dublin South Central.

“The current government are acting like ostriches, with their heads in the sand, when it comes to housing policy” he said.
Liam also said that more needs to be done by the State to end the scourge of homelessness.
